These are the pairs that make nature look flatter with red-green color blindness: a red flower against green leaves, a ripe red berry in foliage, autumn red against autumn yellow. For normal vision they're bold contrasts; under protanopia and deuteranopia they converge on the same olive — and the red often ends up darker than the green around it. Read each pair top-to-bottom: under protanopia and deuteranopia the red and green land on nearly the same olive, and the red is often the darker of the two — which is why a red rose reads as 'a slightly darker blob' on the bush. How Forests and Foliage Appear
To someone with red-green color blindness, a dense forest looks more uniform. The many distinct greens that normal vision separates — new spring growth, deep pine, yellow-green ferns — compress toward a narrower band of yellowish to brownish green. The scene doesn't turn grey, but it loses variety and depth.
The trade-off is that overall brightness, texture, and form become more prominent. A colorblind hiker still reads the shape of the canopy, the play of light and shadow, and the texture of bark and leaves — the information just comes from cues other than hue.
Sunsets Through Colorblind Eyes
A sunset's drama comes largely from the reds and oranges bleeding into blue. Because red-green deficiency mutes exactly those reds and oranges, a fiery sunset appears in gentler tones — muted yellows, soft browns, and grey-blue near the horizon. It's not colorless, and the blue end of the sky is preserved, so many colorblind people still find sunsets beautiful; they simply see a calmer version of the same sky.
Flowers and Gardens
Gardens are designed around color contrast, and red flowers are the biggest casualty. A red rose or a bed of red tulips against green leaves loses almost all its pop — it can even read as darker than the foliage. Yellow, orange, and especially blue flowers stay vivid, so a colorblind gardener often gravitates toward blue-and-yellow planting schemes, which look striking to everyone. Purple flowers shift too: with less red in the mix, lavender and violet read as a purer blue.
Wildlife and Color
Animals that rely on red or orange signals are harder to pick out. A cardinal or a red-breasted robin against foliage, or a poison frog's red warning coloration, loses the contrast that normal vision uses to spot it. Colorblind observers lean on shape, pattern, movement, song, and habitat instead — cues that are often more reliable for identification than color anyway.
The Colorblind Advantage: Seeing Through Camouflage
Here's the twist nature offers: red-green color blindness can be an advantage for spotting camouflaged objects. Many natural and military camouflage patterns are built to blend colored objects into a colored background — but that trick works by fooling color vision. A colorblind viewer, less distracted by the color match, can pick up on the texture and brightness differences the camouflage was designed to hide.
This isn't just folklore. Controlled studies (e.g. Morgan, Adam & Mollon in Scientific Reports) have found that people with certain color-vision deficiencies can outperform those with normal vision at breaking specific kinds of color camouflage — and historically some armed forces valued colorblind observers as spotters for exactly this reason. It's a genuine reminder that 'deficiency' is relative to the task.
